All first-time CDL A applicants must complete ELDT theory before the skills test. Class A covers tractor-trailers, doubles, triples, and combination vehicles.
All first-time CDL B applicants must complete ELDT theory before the skills test. Class B covers straight trucks, school buses, transit buses, and other large single-unit vehicles.
Adding a School Bus (S) endorsement? FMCSA requires School Bus ELDT theory for any first-time applicant — and most states require the Passenger endorsement first.
Adding a Passenger (P) endorsement? Required for charter buses, transit operators, shuttle drivers, and any vehicle designed for 16 or more people including the driver.
